Italian school; 17th century."The Trial of Christ".Oil on canvas. Relined.Measurements: 118 x 154 cm.We see in this canvas the presentation of Jesus captive to be later condemned by Pilate. This scene can be identified as the first of the steps of the Way of the Cross. The Via Crucis or Way of the Cross, which refers to the different stages and moments experienced by Jesus Christ from the moment he was apprehended until his crucifixion and burial. Theologically, it is a path of prayer, which seeks to draw the faithful into the meditation of Jesus on his way to Calvary. The scene is conceived in a totally theatrical way, the intention of which is to capture the spectator's attention. In the work, the monumental body of Christ, seized by the soldiers, is placed in the right-hand side of the composition in an elevated area, a device which the artist has used to give him the leading role, despite having moved his figure from the centre. In this intermediate area he has introduced a semicircular arch through which we can see a landscape constructed in perspective that gives the work a sense of spaciousness and relaxes the composition, which has a large number of figures that overlap each other. A woman breastfeeds her child, a vivid scene of the invocation of the Virgin of the Milk, so these figures could be a representation of the beginning of Jesus' life, and the old woman who seems to protect these two figures could represent Saint Anne, thus representing a Holy Family. Finally, on the right-hand side of the scene, the artist introduces several standing figures, which compositionally balance the scene. In this work we see a monumental and scenographic composition, typical of the full Venetian Baroque, which shows the influence of Veronese not only in the dynamism and organisation of the figures, but also in the chromatic range, the construction of the space and the eloquence of the expressions, which are perfectly individualised.
