Italian school; 17th century."Young People at the Well".Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.It has restorations and repainting. It has frame c. 1830.Size: 160 x 102 cm; 185 x 125 cm (frame). The author of this work presents us two women, situated behind a well. Both contemplate something that is outside the composition, and the attitude of one of them indicates that it is a fact in which they seem to be accomplices. The other figure, who stands out for her corpulence, holds the rope with which she ties the bucket that draws water from the well. Set in a narrow space, the scene is emphasised by the presence of the large, classically inspired column in the background. The genre theme is rooted in the Romantic vision which, among other aspects, pays special attention to those traditional, popular or typical customs which reflect what is understood to be the genuine way of being and living of the people of the village, their traditions and values, and does so from a mythical and idealised perspective in which the popular classes, especially those of the rural environment, are always contrasted with the model personified by the growing city, which has grown in the heat of industrialisation. This composition and the theme treated by the author are based on scenes from the popular reality of the Baroque period, which were also common in the picaresque literature of the time, bringing this group of paintings closer to the naturalist trend. It is a genre in which popular types and attitudes, behaviour, values and habits common to a specific group of the population, region or class are described by means of a satirical, nostalgic or narrative description of the environments, customs, clothing, festivals and entertainments, traditions, trades and representative types of a society. The idea of costumbrismo arose from an attempt to understand reality, or more precisely, reality understood in a particular way, from a specific point of view.
