Italian school; 17th century."Still life".Oil on canvas. Re-drawn.It presents faults in the pictorial surface. It conserves a period frame.Measurements: 64 x 75 cm; 79 x 91 cm (frame). On a stone base the author arranges a diverse quantity of elements like tomatoes, grapes, kitchenware, nuts and three small white flowers that break with the general tonality of the work, introducing this way dynamism to the scene. Despite the fact that the upper corners of the painting show a sky, the space is not appreciated in depth, as it is taken up by the large basket of grapes in the centre, so that the arrangement is organised in the manner of a frieze. The artist shows his mastery in capturing the qualities, although it is true that in terms of finish, the objects in the foreground are more defined. This is a dynamic composition in terms of the arrangement of the elements, a composition centred and dominated by geometry, where we can also appreciate open and dynamic structures, full of diagonals, in the full Baroque style. The lighting aspect, on the other hand, is key in this work, and reveals the direct influence of the Tenebrist Baroque, which reached these still-life painters and lasted until well into the 18th century. The still life or still life occupied the lowest rung of the hierarchy of genres in the history of art, but it became increasingly popular with buyers. In addition to the independent subject of the still life, it addressed other types of painting themes by using prominent, usually symbolic elements and images that drew on a multitude of elements from nature apparently to reproduce a slice of life.
