An Italian Carved and Stained Figure of a Page Boy in the Manner of Valentino BesarelLate 19th/Early 20th Centurythe wood stained to simulate patinated bronze, with an associated base; unsigned.Height overall 80 1/4 inches. Note:Carved figures of Renaissance page boys such as the present lot were made by the Venetian atelier of Valentino Panciera Besarel (1829-1902), a renowned producer of decorative arts in the second half of the nineteenth century. The design for similar figures has been attributed to such sculptors as Luigi de Paoli, Goffredo Sommavilla and Luigi Cima, each of whom apprenticed at the Besarel atelier prior to their respective independent careers. The figures were carved to don late medieval style dress, a more romanticized than historically accurate interpretation of Renaissance page boy uniforms.
