A BIÊN HÒA 边和 STONEWARE COCKFIGHT - CHỌI GÀ VIETNAM, BIÊN HÒA 边和 SCHOOL OF APPLIED ARTS, SECOND HALF OF 20TH CENTURY This lot is composed of two sculptures of naturalistically potted fighting roosters enameled in green, red and yellow. Each bears an impressed mark on the base: ‘边和’, lit. ‘Biên Hòa’. Dimensions (each): H: 25,8 cm - L: 33 cm Provenance: A private collection of Vietnamese Art, French Riviera, France. Note: Cock fighting, a long-standing form of popular entertainment in Vietnam, is organized during traditional festivals. Professional trainers choose young chickens carefully, individually preparing their food and drink, bathing them, separating them from hens, and training them in fighting positions. A fighting cock must be so acquainted with its owner that it will allow only the owner to hold him.
