A HEAVY CAST GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF A STANDING KANNON WITH A DATE CORRESPONDING TO THE 2ND YEAR OF THE TENPŌ 天保 PERIOD (1831) JAPAN, 19TH CENTURY The Goddess of Mercy is depicted standing on a lotus base, wearing loose robes with floating ribbons as well as a tiara and holding a holy water vase in her left hand. The mandorla is finely detailed with incisions. Its back is inscribed with a long calligraphy: ‘天保二年十一月十六日樂阿就上為父造觀音像區願使記西方快樂’.
