The artist has given the Historical Buddha a cheerful demeanor, perhaps intending to dispel any potential anger or concern within the viewer. Closely related sculptures are published in von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, 1981, pp. 431 & 440, nos. 113F & 118A.
