MAHASIDDHAS Tibet, probably Amdo, late 18th/ early 19th ct. 124 x 95 cm R. Tempera on cotton fabric. Part of a large mural with depictions of Mahasiddhas surrounded by a rocky landscape. In the foreground is the half figure of a siddha protectively placing his hands on the heads of a mandolin player and a flute player. On the left of the picture is another Siddha, with a red meditation band over his shoulder, holding a bow and arrow in his hands, ready to shoot, perhaps aimed at the two birds sitting above him on a pine branch. In front of him stands a companion with a killed animal with brown fur lying over his shoulder, carrying understatement from the hunt home together. Another siddha with a white turban crouches on a protruding rock plateau. Next to him is a white elephant, symbolic of the spiritual peace he has attained through meditative practice. On the right side of the picture, a Siddha is crouching on a sitting rug, watching mountain goats climbing on a rocky slope, which a wolf is lying in wait for and threatening. Mounted on a stretcher frame. From a private collection in southern Germany, acquired before 2007 Minor wear and restored
