It was first manufactured in yellow and white gold and since 2010 is available in pink gold also. The special limited edition watches made for Patek Philippe’s London Watch Art Grand Exhibition in 2015 are among the most desirable versions of those references. The present watch, the white gold reference 5159G-012 perpetual calendar moon phase with retrograde date is one of these highly exclusive watches. Furthermore, it is only the second example of the reference 5159G-012 ‘London’ to be offered at auction since its release seven years ago. Presented in excellent like new condition, it is also accompanied by the full set of accessories. Patek Philippe chose London to host the third Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition in 2015. To commemorate this highly prestigious event and in order to create some very special watches for their VIP clients, a series of various limited edition versions of selected references were produced. All the ‘London’ edition models were engraved “London 2015” and some, like the present watch were fitted with special dials too. The present reference 5159G-012 was made in a limited edition of 80 pieces, the officier-style case with hinged back is engraved with the London 2015 inscription. The beautiful silvered dial of the London watch is unique to this edition and features Breguet numerals and a ‘railway’ outer minutes track as opposed to the Roman numerals and baton/Arabic minute track of the standard production watches. The white gold reference 5159G is a model that is becoming regarded as Patek Philippe classic. It was introduced in 2007 with a larger case than its predecessor reference 5059, first manufactured in 18K yellow and 18K white gold, since 2010 is has also been available in pink gold. The dial design allows the display of several complications in an extremely elegant and easily readable way. In the upper half of the dial is the retrograde date scale numbered 1-31, when the hand reaches the last date of the month the hand instantly ‘flies’ back to the beginning. Apertures for the days of the week at 9 o’clock and months at 3 o’clock are centred by the leap-year indication below 12 o’clock. Placed in the lower half of the dial is the aperture for the moon phases.
