L6 ChondriteViñales, Pinar del Rio Province, CubaOn February 1, 2019, a blazing explosion, several deafening sonic booms and an extensive smoke trail were observed in Pinar del Rio Province, Cuba. Believed by residents to be an airplane crash, the explosion was soon accompanied by a shower of meteorites, which fell on Viñales Valley, a national monument and UNESCO world heritage site. The long smoke trail which was captured on video and shared on social media and many of the major news outlets. Later classified as an L6 chondrite, Viñales is one of the largest meteorite falls since the Chelyabinsk meteorite which fell in Russia in February, 2013. Many specimens were recovered from rooftops, one pierced an asphalt road and some penetrated the ground. The first, and some of the largest, stones were collected near the monument Mural of Prehistory by artist Leovigildo Gonzalez Morillo.
