PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF PATRICIA AND PROFESSOR ROLAND WINSTON Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884)Calligraphy in regular and running script Circular fan leaf, mounted and framed, ink on silk, inscribed and signed Zhao Zhiqian, with a dedication to Naiqing and one seal of the artist Zhao Huishu . 9¾ x 10in (24.6 x 25.4cm) 趙之謙 後漢書《儒林傳》 水墨絹本 扇面 鏡框 Provenance: Far East Fine Arts, San Francisco, California, May 2003 來源: 2003年5月購自美國加州舊金山遠東藝術中心 As stated in the artist's inscription, the text is excerpted from the Rulin zhuan chapter of the Hou Han Shu , a history of the Han dynasty written in the fifth century. Zhao Zhiqian's script style is strongly derived from that of the Northern Wei (386-534), with dramatic flaring strokes and sharp edges. The likely recipient of this fan is Yu Naiqing, a Hangzhou native who was close with Zhao Zhiqian.
