During the late Qing dynasty this bronze ding was part of the collection of Duanfang (1861-1911), an important government official. Duanfang attained numerous high government posts, and in 1905, he was one of a number of Qing dynasty officials who traveled overseas with a government entourage to study different systems of government. Received at the White House in Washington D.C. in 1906, the embassy also traveled to Europe, and paid diplomatic visits to Germany, Russia, and Italy. In addition to his government duties, he was also famed connoisseur and collector of antiquarian objects, including some of the most important bronze vessels from the early Chinese civilization.
