Large shaman figure, Costa Rica c. 1200 A.D. Cast in lost wax process, Tumbaga gold. H. 10.5, w. 5.5 cm, weight 170 g. Depiction of a kneeling man with straight hair. The face looks meditative with closed eyes and thin mouth. Ears with spiral decoration. Around the neck a wide chain with spiral pendants. In each of the outstretched hands a staff with a bird crown and a crescent-shaped crown, respectively. Around the hips a double belt, to which bands are attached laterally and at the back. Legs extended to the back, openwork spiral pattern on the sides. Feet not indicated. Eyelets are attached to the shoulders. Imposing shaman figure, either worn as a pectoral or attached to a stick. According to the previous consignor, this is an object from a large collection from which random samples of 15 objects were analyzed and dated around 1200 AD. The analysis was carried out by Prof. Dr. Ernst-Ludwig Richter, State Academy of Fine Arts, Stuttgart, 04.02.1991. Provenance: Baden private collection.
