A PREDELLA RELIEF OF THE LAST SUPPER probably Mid-German, 1st quarter of the 28 x 78 cm, Kasten 46 x 100 cm Marble, worked from two parts in high relief. Some heads are missing, damages, remnants of gilding. Mounted in a later wooden frame. Poperty of a Thuringian noble family, formerly inventory of Poschwitz Castle. The relief is shown on an interior photography of the office room, probably from the 1930s. The Lord's Supper scene shows clear sculptural influences from Italy. But sculptors were also active in Central Germany who orientated themselves on Italian work and had knowledge of the styles of various art centers. An example is the Nosseni Altar by the Swiss sculptor Giovanni Maria Nosseni (1544-1620), commissioned by Electress Sophie von Sachsen for the Dresden Sophienkirche in 1606 (today in the Loschwitz Church, Dresden). It is considered the main work of Mannierism in Saxony, various sculptors were involved who adapted Italian aspects to the Nordic taste. The base relief shows an extremely similar Last Supper scene in structure, which is attributed to Sebastian Walther. Lit. Walter Hentschel, Dresdner Bildhauer des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts, fig. 71.
