A PAIR OF AUSTRIAN GOTHIC ANGELS Carinthia, Neuere Villacher Werkstätten, circa 1520 H. 50 cm Hardwood, crarved in full round. The bottom part worked over. The angels probably designed for a burial site. Original polychromy retouches, remains of primer in the area of the incarnate. Wings and hands are missing. Light age damages. South German private collection, assembled between 1955 and 1980. Very similar to the two sculptures at hand is a group of angels on the main altar in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Pontebba. (Lit. Otto Demus, Die Spätgotischen Altäre Kärntens, p. 320 ff., fig. 394 - see Abb./fig. 1) and two angels with candlesticks from, today in the Landesmuseum Joanneum/Graz. (Lit. G.
