A RARE RITUAL DAGGER 'PHUR-BA' Tibet, ca, 13th ct. L. 31 cm Bronze, dagger point and central axis of iron. This iconographically interesting ritual dagger shows a three-faced head of the dagger deity at the top of the handle. Each face bears a fivefold crown of skulls. In front of the tied-up hair is the icon of a deity in moving gesture. Below the winding bead, four more representations appear in the same style (dakinis?) as above. Below follows a five-rayed vajra at the lower end of which is a basket-like infinite knot with (Buddha?) heads protruding from the interstices. This is followed by the head of a makara, on whose forehead another figure is depicted, lunging with arms in motion. The obligatory three-edged dagger point emerges from the mouth of the sea monster. From the estate of the collection of Thomas Marcotty (1930-2005), published in Marcotty: "Phurpa - Magisches Dolchritual aus Tibet", Fabri Verlag, Ulm, 1997, pp. 3, 62, back cover and published in Arts of Asia; July/August, 1987, Amy Heller/Thomas Marcotti, Phur-ba - Tibetan Ritual Daggers and published in 'Dolchsegen, Schatz-Texte des tibetischen Phur-ba Kultes': with an essay of Thomas Marcotti, photocopied manuscript; Lugano, 1986: p. 6, Dakini-Kraft p. 62 Wear, traces of age
