此信筒为西藏地区典型实用器，因当时交通不便，多以马为交通工具，信筒便于携带、保护信件安全，多流传于西藏等地。
此信筒尺寸较大，分上下两段，可开合，且两段闭合处有可穿绳佩戴环孔，首尾各饰一钮，做工精巧细致。器身通体以鋄银、鋄红铜工艺装饰锦地纹、卷草文，纹饰繁缛精细，卷草文曼妙多姿，纹饰中以鋄金装饰寿字纹，层次分明，十分华丽。
