宋元时期，云南大理国佛教极为昌盛，有“佛国”“妙香国”之称，史书述大理国佛教得胡、梵、汉风，且做为贸易枢纽，大理与缅甸及其他南亚国家交往密切，多方文化之交流影响，自然造就其造像艺术独有面貌特征。
此尊释迦牟尼坐像带有典型大理佛造像特点，肉髻平缓，额宽颊丰，呈满月脸，鼻翼宽阔，双眉舒展，双眼呈月牙形，上眼睑微下垂，颔首俯视，嘴角上翘，大耳垂肩，神态和蔼可亲，容貌慈善悲悯。身着通肩式袈裟，衣褶流畅自然，手结说法印，身形敦实健硕。尊像通身以红漆、漆金为饰，亲切温和中更有庄重华贵。
