明代香鸭通常有两种方式将其打开：一是在鸭腹中线将其一分为二，上半部分揭起，下半部分置香；二则是在鸭翅部分与身体的连接处将其与炉身分离，翅身作为炉盖。需置香时取下鸭翅即可打开香炉，合上时连接部分隐藏起来，看不到连接线，浑然一体。既是香炉，就必须有进气与出气口才能使用。明代的鸭形香炉多数在背部设进气口，将鸭口制成打开状，用以出气。此件宝鸭香熏即为前者，本品铜质，铸以宝鸭形，鸭昂首，张口，似引颈而歌，两翼后敛，鸭羽鳞次栉比，或曲或舒，灵动别致。短尾后翘，双掌伫立。鸭腹与上半身以子母口相扣合，羽翼盖上及鸭身刻款，器盖同铭，颇为难得，鸭嘴与鸭身通畅连接，熏香点起时，绵绵香气会从鸭嘴处及尾羽处袅袅冒出，神怡自然，整器包浆浓厚，古意盎然，置于案前，妙趣中来，实为文房案头陈设实用佳器。
