John Woodrow Wilson was an African-American artist who initially studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1950, he received a John Hay Whitney scholarship, enabling him to move to Mexico, where he spent the next six years. While there, he enrolled in La Esmeralda School in Mexico City to study mural painting, like Charles White and Elizabeth Catlett before him. In Mexico he also completed a small group of lithographs depicting Mexican manual laborers working in the streets, of which “La Calle” is one. Image copyright © The Estate of John Woodrow Wilson.
