Description

The work is part of a cycle of 4 Brussels over-door tapestries, fine and well preserved, copied by one of the greatest painters and cartoonists of the Flemish seventeenth century, Jacob Jordaens. The upper tapestry reproduces a portion of the Jordaens tapestry depicting the "Wedding Banquet of Peleus and Teti". The subject is taken from Ovid, Metamorphosis XI, 221-265. It is thought that the cartoon was prepared by Jordaens together with two others to expand the cycle of the Stories of Achilles, of eight subjects, whose cartoons were prepared by Pieter Paul Rubens around 1638-1639 (see E. Haverkamp Begemann, " The Achilles Series ", Corpus rubenianum Ludwing Burchard, Part X). Jordaens' intervention was probably necessitated by the fact that Rubens, who died in 1640, was unable to provide for the expansion of his cycle in person. The Achille's supplementary cartoons had to be designed and prepared by Jordaens between 1640 and 1642, when the Brussels tapestry maker Jan Raes was commissioned to weave an enlarged Achilles Story of twelve subjects. The work in question depicts Jupiter shirtless, with the golden apple in one hand, Juno on his right, her head covered with a veil, the scepter of queen of the gods placed on the table in front of her, and Mercury with the its characteristic wings applied to the hat, to the left of Jupiter, on the tabletop in front of the figures you can see a glass, a peeled lemon, some fruit in a basket
