He studied Western painting in France, and after his return to China, he was engaged in art education for a long time, teaching at the Department of Art of the National Central University, the School of Art of Beiping University and Beiping Art College.After 1949, he became the director of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He specialized in figures, animals and birds, advocated realism, and especially respected Ren Bonian in the tradition, emphasized the reform of Chinese painting into Western painting techniques, advocated light and shape, demanded accurate grasp of the anatomical structure and bones of objects, and emphasized the ideological connotation of his works, which greatly influenced the Chinese painting world at that time.
