He is also a calligrapher, called "the four great calligraphers of the 20th century"together with Bai Jiao, Gao Ershi and Li Zhimin .Huang Binhong researched tradition and paid attention to paint from life together.In his early years, influenced by the "Xin'an school of painting ", he was characterized by dry brush, light ink, clear and elegant, and was called "white Binhong"; After the age of 80, it is characterized by black dense and heavy ,massiness and transparency. It is called "black Binhong". His technique is based on Li Liufang and Cheng Shen, and his works emphasize the unity of solidity, simplicity, and sparseness in terms of chapter style.It is concise, dignified, powerful and cautious .The so-called "black, dense, thick and heavy" painting style is his remarkable feature.
