LANDSCAPE PAINTING BY ZHANG DAQIAN W.83cm H.151cm Description: Inscription:"An evening view of the river levee by Dong Yuan, deputy envoy of the Northern Court of the Southern Tang Dynasty..." Seal: Great Wind Hall. Shen Kuo of the Song Dynasty said that Dong Yuan mostly painted about the real mountains in regions south of the Yangtze River but without any strange and craggy brushwork". The mountains painted are mostly hills in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, mostly undulating and rocky, and seldom steep and precipitous. . This is in sharp contrast to the majestic northern mountain shape shown by Jing Hao earlier. Dong Yuan attaches great importance to the portrayal of figures in landscape painting, which often has the plot of genre painting , and is sometimes the subject matter of the whole painting, sometimes it is related to the theme of the whole painting. Although the forms are small, they are simple and precise, the characters are set with heavy colors such as green, red and white, which are set off by the ink chops, giving them an ancient interest. The new style of ink landscape painting created by Dong Yuan was followed by monk Ju Ran at that time, and later generations called it Dong Ju. In the Song Dynasty, in addition to Mi Fu and Shen Kuo's admiration for Dong Ju's school of painting, the trend of adopting Dong Ju's painting style gradually opened up in the Yuan Dynasty. Tang Hou believes that "the landscape painting of Tang Dynasty began to be ready in the Song Dynasty, but Dong Yuan was above all the others", so there was a new understanding of Dong Yuan. In the late Yuan Dynasty, the four schools and the Wu School of the Ming Dynasty held Dong Yuan as a model, and in the late Ming Dynasty, the "North-South School" theorists respected Wang Wei as the "ancestor of Southern painting" theoretically ,But they were acually worshiping and following forefathers Dong Yuan.Huang Gongwang of the Yuan Dynasty said, "those who painted landscape must take Dong as their teacher, as in the case of poetry learning from Du".Wang Jian of the Qing Dynasty said that "Dong Ju is the master of painting, just as Zhong and Wang are the masters of calligraphy".It is rare in the history of Chinese landscape painting for Dong Yuan to have such a profound influence on later generations. According to Zhang Daqian's textual research, this painting is attributed to Dong Yuan. It is written in history that Dong Yuan's ink painting is similar to Wang Wei's, and his coloring is like Li Sixun's." In the Northern Song Dynasty, the painting was also known for its green coloring, and the mountains and rocks are all characteristics of Dong Yuan's style. In the painting, the green waves are sparkling and the mountains are high, the horses' hooves are light and there is a sense of spring. This painting is a bequest from Mr. Zhang Daqian. There are inscriptions and postscripts of Zhang Daqian and other scholars on the painting.
