嘎乌属于宗教用具，为藏语音译，多指挂在项上的或背挎式的佛盒饰物。嘎乌内大多装有佛像、护法神像或护身符。实为随身携带的佛龛。佛龛是藏人出门在外时携带，佛龛内放置着袖珍佛像或其它圣物，以便能够获得福运，禳灾驱邪，从中可以看出藏传佛教的修习方式影响到藏语人民的日常生活。嘎乌的质地有金质、银质、铜质等金属嘎乌，也有木质的。
