此天魁星巨眼獠牙，面目狰狞。衣带迎风翻卷，身躯瘦骨嶙峋，气度古拙神秘，直欲飞升而去，令人顿感不寒而栗，颇具震慑力。整器制作高妙精绝，比例协调。魁星是古代神话中主宰文章兴衰之神。明清之际，大学者顾炎武认为神像不能像『奎』而改『奎』为『魁』，而取之字形，为鬼举足而起其斗。故魁星神像大多头部像鬼，一脚向后翘起，如『魁』字之弯钩；一手捧斗，如『魁』字间之『斗』字，一手执笔，寓意点取中榜人姓名。此样造型曾在颇长时段内，成为魁星之标准样式，本品即为典型代表。
