唐宋之时，歙石作砚已然盛行。南唐后主李煜赞“歙砚甲天下”；苏东坡评“涩不留笔，滑不拒墨，瓜肤而縠理，金声而玉德”；米芾则称“其质坚丽，呵气生云，贮水不涸”。《一统志》记载歙砚品种有五：一曰眉子石，二曰外山罗纹，三曰里山罗纹，四曰金星，三种，五曰驴坑。此件即选用眉纹歙石而制，作云龙戏珠之形。龙身团盘成环，首尾相接，其额顶高突，双目圆瞪，阔口大张，须发上扬。身躯阴刻扇形龙鳞，龙爪狰狞，祥云绕体。居中宝珠作砚面，边缘起线。所用眉纹歙石纹饰斑驳，莹润细滑，抚之妙不可言。
