A mid 19th century scrolling ribbon garnet brooch, with swag detail, suspending an oval-shape garnet panel, with glazed reverse. Length 16.6cms. 11.1gms. Overall condition fair. Surface scratches/ wear, discolouration and dents in keeping with general age and wear. Garnet medium purplish red, fairly well saturated, with good clarity and typical inclusions. Garnets are fairly well matched. Stones in fair condition with some abrasion and minor nibbles to the girdle and facet edges. Replacement brooch fittings. Some of the swag detail is attached by string. Glazed panel has a crack. Top section tests as 15ct gold, swag section, tests as 18ct Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns. Fellows does not guarantee the standard of gold or platinum unless an item is hallmarked.
