Bies, Eindhoven (1989) (inv./cat. no. 5) - Property of a Dutch family Note: Registered at the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History in The Hague under number 122544. Louize Aletta Hoyer van Brakel came from a distinguished Rotterdam family. Hoyer van Brakel initially practiced painting as a hobby. She was taught by the portrait and history painter James Everhardus Josephus van den Berg, the still life painter Eline Robin and history painter Cornelis Groenendael. Rather soon Hoyer van Brakel made name as a painter of still lifes of flowers and fruit. As a free-spirited woman, Hoyer van Brakel taught young women at a time when training opportunities at drawing institutes were limited. Around 1844 Hoyer van Brakel departed to London, where she exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and The British Institution. According to a family memorandum, Louize Aletta Hoyer van Brakel died in Brunswijck in 1871, at the age of 66 years. Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request.
