China, 20th century.Coral.Wood base.Weight: 434 gr (total weight with base).Measurements: 7.5 x 8 x 5 cm (without base); 12 x 16 x 10 cm (with base). The Buddha of happiness, called Hotei in Japanese culture and Bu-Dai in Chinese culture, is popularly known as the deity of happiness and abundance. Throughout the history of oriental art, the figure of the smiling Buddha has acquired different representations: sometimes he is depicted as a Buddha with an exuberant belly sitting on a bag containing treasures. In his left hand he holds a gold piece in the shape of a boat or mala (rosary) and in his right hand a fan called an oogi; at other times he is shown as a figure carrying a bundle on his back or surrounded by children playing with him: legend has it that Bu-Dai was a wanderer who attained enlightenment under a bridge one stormy day after hearing thunder rumble. This character was not interested in gathering disciples, which is why instead of preaching in a temple as usual, he went through the streets with a large sack on his back carrying gifts for the children. In this way, the little ones would surround themselves around him. Bu-Dai's main characteristic was to laugh. The monk had a magical and contagious laughter, sincere and authentic that made his big belly vibrate with the multiple guffaws. According to the same legend, all the villages anxiously awaited Bu-Dai's visit to be blessed by his laughter, bringer of well-being and prosperity.
