Seville school, around 1860."View of Seville from the Pier de las Delicias and Prado de San Sebastián".Oil on canvas. Relined.Illegible signature.Measurements: 85 x 102 cm; 105 x 121 cm (frame). This oil painting is part of the Andalusian romanticism that, as a result of the influence of English travelers, focused on the representation of landscapes, types and local customs, acquiring however a strong personality. In this work the painter offers us a view of the city of Seville captured in the mid-nineteenth century, from the banks of the Guadalquivir River. The landscape, of ambitious composition, appears populated by popular characters in different attitudes, and in the background, along the riverbank, we can see a multitudinous religious procession. On the water, the artist depicts several boats, among which a steamboat stands out, an absolute symbol of modernity at the time. Due to its physical and formal characteristics, the work closely follows the pictorial guidelines established by Andrés Cortes, an Andalusian painter who stood out as a great landscape painter of Sevillian costumbrismo, with works in which he was especially influenced by the Dutch masters of the 17th century, something that was common among the Sevillian landscape masters of the time.
