Italian or Spanish school of the seventeenth century."Card Players".Oil on canvas.Andalusian frame from the 18th century.Measurements: 112 x 90 cm; 121 x 99 cm (frame). The work in question may have taken as a reference "The Denial of St. Peter", a canvas by Gerard Seghers (1591-1651) around 1623, now preserved in the North Carolina Museum of Art, or one of his followers. In this last aspect we can highlight how, according to a study by Antonio Romero Dorado and Oscar Franco Cotán carried out in 2019, in the parish church of San Marcos de Jerez de la Frontera there is a later copy of "La negacÃon de San Pedro", which could have been made from a print of the original by Seghers, engraved by Schelte Adamszoom à Bolswert. Be that as it may, both the present work (in which the protagonists are a group of card players), as well as the others mentioned, are characterized by the same features: tenebrist lighting, strong chiaroscuro effects, very defined diagonals, development inside a tavern, etc. This type of painting was characterized by depicting tavern interiors populated by colorful and vulgar characters, often even violent.
