Colonial school; century XVIII."Santa MarÃa de la Cabeza and San Isidro Labrador".Oil on taba integrated into the frame.Measures: 61.5 x 46 cm; 62 x 46.5 cm (frame).Set of oil paintings on panel both representing a religious image. The two pieces are integrated into a carved wooden frame. Regarding the image that each one shows, they are not identical but they complement each other. Both aesthetically and thematically they show Santa Maria de la Cabeza and her husband San Isidro Labrador. Isidro Labrador (Madrid, 1080-1172), was beatified by Paul V in 1619, and canonized in 1622 by Gregory XV. He was declared patron saint of Spanish farmers by John XXIII in 1960. Among the most famous is the miracle of the well in which, thanks to his prayer, the waters rose to rescue his son, who had fallen in. Another is the one in which the angels help the saint to plow a field, allowing him to stop and pray in all the parishes through which he passed on his way to work. His iconographic representation is directly related to his work as a farmer, being his most frequent symbols the tools of the field, such as the hoe or the shovel. He is also usually represented with a rosary, grilles or ears of corn.It is worth mentioning that during the Spanish colonial domination, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianizing the indigenous peoples. The local painters were modeled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of types and iconography. The most frequent models were the harquebusier angels and the triangular virgins, however, in the first years of the 19th century, already in times of independence and political opening of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity.
