Spanish school, probably Sevillian, 17th century."Virgin with Child and Breaking of Glory".Oil on canvas.Measurements: 55 x 68 cm .; 71 x 84 cm. (Frame). This is an iconographically fertile painting, in which the Virgin and Child are visited by a court of angels. Through a typically baroque break of glory, the archangels burst in among golden vapors carrying a cross. In doing so, they announce to Jesus his redemptive mission. He extends his arms towards the cross as a sign of acceptance and Mary tilts her head, looking serene but resigned to the loss of her son. St. Joseph is not physically present but the vase of lilies on the table evokes his figure. The scissors, together with the cloth and the sewing elements, also symbolize the divine cross. Behind the Virgin, a canopied bed can be seen. In the painting, the detailed description of the domestic objects is combined with the idealism impressed in the divine and angelic faces, as well as in the sacred lights. This combination between the naturalistic description and the idealism of the figures is characteristic of the Sevillian Baroque school.
