Spanish school, second half 16th century."The visitation of Mary to Elizabeth".Oil on panel.Measurements: 32 x 34 cm .; 59 x 61 cm. (Frame). Two female figures, dressed in tunics and wearing white veils with haloes, embrace each other in the foreground. To the right of the composition, a classicist-style architecture is the only element that sets the scene in the city of Hebron. Two other women contemplate the scene. A mountainous landscape can be seen in the background. This late Renaissance style panel depicts the visit of the Virgin, already pregnant with Christ, to her older cousin Elizabeth, pregnant by St. John the Baptist, a theme taken from the Gospel of Luke (1: 39-56). The text of the Bible is followed in detail: it is even possible that Elizabeth's posture, kneeling, was either to feel the movement of her son when recognizing Christ, or alluding to the greeting she makes to Mary ("Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb"). The skillful work of the drapery stands out, through whose folds the lights meander, welcoming subtly sifted chromatic ranges.
