Flemish school, 17th century."Jesus and Juanito with the Lamb".Oil on canvas.Repaints.Measurements: 78 x 113 cm .; 92 x 127 cm. (Frame).Country scene in which a biblical theme is developed. St. John the Baptist and Jesus, both infants, are represented with the lamb of the passion. Next to them rests a cross with the inscription "Ecce Agnus Dei" in the phylactery. The theme of the Agnus Dei, whose purpose was to express by means of symbols the ultimate end of the birth and death of Christ, seems in this case to have served as an excuse to carry out a broad landscape, whose bluish shades in the distance, zigzagging around the river, and varied shades of green in the first layers express the pictorial concerns of Flemish art of the Baroque period. Thus, the sifted lights of the landscape highlight the pinkish flesh tones of the children, who frolic in a leafy eden. The sensuality of the pearly tones and the plump bodies is framed in an essentially Flemish language.
