Italian school, mid 17th century.Portrait of boy.Oil on canvas.French frame: c.1820.Measurements: 47 x 55 cm .; 65 x 72.5 cm. (Frame). The portrait of this young man, resolved with firm strokes and a skillful modeling of volumes through chiaroscuro, is characterized by a curious synthesis between classicism and the search for a popular peasant typology. This reveals the influence of the Italian baroque painter Annibale Carracci, who had created an important Roman-Bolognese school. Our character bows his head, and his large, dark eyes seem to marvel at something that is happening before him. A faint glow lights up his cheeks. His protruding cheekbones and beautifully outlined lips follow the tradition inaugurated by Carracci. The lighting is dominated by golden, sienna and earthy tones, resolved with expressive contrasts. This figure was part of a large painting, probably with a biblical or mythological theme.
