Reengineered.Measures: 119 x 88 cm.Tiberius Caesar Augustus ( 42 B.C. - 37 A.D.) was the second Roman emperor, who reigned from 14 to 37 A.D. He succeeded his stepfather, Augustus. Tiberius was one of Rome's most important generals: his conquests of Pannonia, Dalmatia, Raetia and parts of Germania laid the foundations of the northern frontier. Still, he came to be remembered as a dark, lonely, and gloomy ruler who never really desired to be emperor; Pliny the Elder called him "the gloomiest of men." After the death of his son Drusus Julius Caesar in 23 AD, Tiberius became more reclusive and distant. During Tiberius' reign, Jews had become more prominent in Rome, and Jewish followers and followers of Jesus Christ began to proselytize Roman citizens, which increased resentments. In 26 A.D. he withdrew from Rome and left the administration largely in the hands of his praetorian prefects. When Tiberius died, he was succeeded by his great-nephew and adopted grandson, Caligula.Portraiture was one of the most original and characteristic manifestations of Roman art. The origin of the Roman portrait appears to be linked more to a concept than to a plastic expression, and reflects like no other artistic genre the vital philosophy of that people. In its formation it is possible to detect three roots: the Etruscan-Italic, the Greek and the autochthonous current of the "maiorum imagines" or funerary masks. The combination of all of them will result in an unmistakable and genuine work. This aesthetic tradition continued from the Renaissance onwards, when a process of reinterpretation of the classical texts and of course the works of art began, which exerted a great influence both technically, formally and thematically.
