Spanish school of the seventeenth century."Coronation of the Virgin".Oil on copper. With important frame from 17th Century.Measurements: 5 x 6.5 cm; 42 x 44.5 cm (frame).Small devotional painting done on copper and centered on the figure of the Virgin Mary, who appears kneeling on a crescent, crowned by the Trinity: God the Father and Jesus Christ flanking her and holding the crown, and the halo of light of the Holy Spirit, on the golden background of the break of glory that dominates the formation. This inverted triangular composition, with the figures of Jesus on the left, Mary and the dove in the center and God the Father on the right was already used in the 16th and 17th centuries by various painters in Spain, among them El Greco (ca. 1592, Museo del Prado) and Velázquez (1641-44, idem). However, Mary appears here kneeling in a praying position, following older models, from the 16th century, which speaks of the diversity of sources typical of the Baroque. The copper is contained in an important baroque frame of the period, made of carved, painted and gilded wood. Rectangular in shape, it has three registers: a first perimeter with smooth golden moldings decorated with volutes; a second work with profuse vegetal motifs composed of thick acanthus leaves worked with naturalism, typically baroque, and a third strip in a lighter tone, with a smooth surface decorated with geometric fillets and small details in bronze.
