Andalusian school, second half 17th century."Appearance of the Virgin of the Head".Oil on copper.Overpaint and old restorations.19th century frame in carved wood.Measurements: 67 x 52 cm .; 91 x 76 cm. (Frame). This painting describes the miracle of the apparition of the Virgin in the village of Andújar. Of baroque period and Andalusian school, it is characterized by the simultaneity of characters that animates the descriptive eagerness: on the right hand side, a villager faints and is attended by two friends, in the foreground, an angel holds a philately and, next to him, they kneel in prayerful attitude. The Virgin stands in the middle of the composition, with the tunic decorated with brocade and decorations that are typical of the Marian invocation of La Cabeza. Venerated in the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, tradition has it that she appeared in the mountains of Andújar in the early morning of August 11 to 12, 1227 to a shepherd from Colomera, named Juan Alonso Rivas. A temple rises behind the Virgin, in reference to the church that will be built in the sierra. The landscape has been resolved with panoramic will, worked at different levels of depth. The orography, which integrates architectural elements, is bathed in lyrical celestial lights. The Virgen de la Cabeza is the patron saint of Andújar by papal bull of St. Pius X on March 18, 1909 and of the diocese of Jaén by papal bull of Pope John XXIII on November 27, 1959.
