New Spanish school; century XVIII."Predella with banner on canvas."Carved and gilded wood.Measures: 96 x 144 cm.Predella made of wood that presents a banner on canvas where you can see the bust of St. Sebastian, who can be iconographically identified by the arrows. Born in Gaul and raised in Milan, Sebastian was a centurion of the first cohort at the time of Emperor Diocletian (late third century - early fourth century). Denounced because he exhorted his friends Mark and Marcellinus to remain firm in their faith, by order of the emperor he was tied to a post in the center of the field of Mars, and served as a live target for the archers who assaulted him. But he did not die for it. The widow Irene, who wanted to raise his body for burial, noticed that he was still breathing, bandaged his wounds and saved his life. After his cure he reappeared before Diocletian to reproach him for his cruelty to the Christians. He was then scourged, beaten to death in the circus and his corpse was thrown into the Maximian sewer. Shortly afterwards, Saint Sebastian appeared to Saint Lucila while she was sleeping to reveal to her the site of his remains, and asked her to bury him in the catacombs. It is worth mentioning that during the Spanish colonial domination, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianizing the indigenous peoples. The local painters had as a model the Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of types and iconography. The most frequent models were the harquebusier angels and the triangular virgins, however, in the early years of the 19th century, already in times of independence and political opening of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity.
