Description

JACOB WEYER (Hamburg, Germany, 1623-1670)."Bucolic scene".Oil on copper.Signed in the lower margin.Measurements: 28 x 32 cm; 46 x 50.5 cm (frame)Although his biographical information is scarce, it is known that Jacob Weyer was a German painter of the 17th century, born in Hamburg in 1623. In reference to his connection with art, it is intuited that he was probably educated in Holland making copies of Dutch works. His earliest dated works date from 1645 and are the earliest evidence of Weyer's activities as an artist. Three years later he was appointed official artist of Hamburg. Among his artistic output, his specialty became genre battle painting, he was very popular among noble and middle-class collectors. Weyer's artistic qualities are also evident in the field of drawing, which exerted a strong influence on several Hamburg artists. He was a teacher of Johann Philip Lemke, was a German painter known for his battle scenes made for the kings of Sweden. His paintings were considered by the Swedish art historian Wilhelm Nisser "the high point and the end point of Swedish realist painting in the 16th century". In short, he was a battle painter influenced by Rembrandt. Weyer died in Hamburg in 1670. His work is in various private collections, also in institutions and museums, highlighting his work "Cavalry attacked by infantry" preserved in the National Gallery in London.
