AN HOURGLASS SKELETON, mid-20th century, a superb finely carved bone, ivory and wooden figure of a standing skeleton holding an hourglass, possibly German or Portuguese, mounted on a carved wooden base, 27.5cm high This work is similar to the 16th century Felix Platter ‘Skeleton Holding an Hourglass’ print, c.1593 and symbolises the passage of time and death.
