Bronze giltTibet, 18th centuryDimensions: Height 14 cm by 9 cmWeight: 606 gramsA plaque with two fiery bands framing a fierce Mahakala standing on a prostrate body upon a double reverse lotus base. The Mahakala is the fierce emanation of the Bodhisattva of compassion and helps to overcome obstacles on the way to enlightenment. He is wielding a sword in his right hand, the other is raised in front of the chest with the index finger pointing to the sky. He is wearing a short dhoti and jewellery, a large garland hanging down on his belly, armlets, anklets and big circular ear pendants. The face has a menacing look. The hair is done up in a big bun, a three-pointed tiara on the head. The backside shows the Mahakala's negative relief.
