A GEORGE IV BURR YEW LAMP TABLE BY ROBERT JAMES OF BRISTOL, C.1825 the drop-leaf top above a cedar lined frieze drawer, with a blue paper printed trade label, inscribed 'Robert James cabinet maker & upholsterer, Royal Polyanthus Wood Manufactory, 35 Broad Mead, Bristol', on turned pole supports united by a turned twin baluster stretcher and brass castors 73.8cm high, 40.8 x 76.6cm (open) Provenance The Estate of the late Jane Sumner. Catalogue Note Robert James was working in Bristol between 1784 and 1831. He was recorded as trading as a cabinet maker in Terill Street during the 1790s. In 1818 he was declared bankrupt but by 1821 he was advertising himself as a 'Manufacturer of the Beautiful Polyanthus Wood' and in 1822 he received a Royal patent and subsequently described himself as 'Manufacturer in British Woods to his Majesty'.
