提胸为马胸前装饰之物，以铜挂配猩红色长鬃制作，可显骏马之雄壮。参阅郎世宁绘《大阅图》可见，乾隆大帝身跨骏马，骏马项下之提胸猩红夺目，甚是雄俊。相传，提胸染色之法源自安南，乃是以猩猩血浸染而成，称之“猩绒”，珍贵无比，价比黄金，岁贡仅有三尺。明代抱瓮老人《古今奇观》中第六十九卷“走安南玉马换猩绒”中亦有详细记载和描述，可资参考。
