Chinese Song/Jin Dynasty Green Glazed Cizhou Pillow of ruyi-head outline, the top incised with a shaped medallion enclosing three peony blooms borne on a leafing stem within a five-line border and delicate cloud scrolls, the slightly tapering sides freely carved with combed foliate motifs between multi-line borders, covered overall with a bright semi-translucent leaf-green glaze pooling effectively in the recesses, two small firing apertures, the base unglazed. Length 13 3/8 inches (34 cm.). PROVENANCE: Collection of Russell M. Tyson (1867-1963), bequest to the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, in 1964 (acc. no. 1964.830), deaccession Sotheby's, New York, 11 September 2019, Important Chinese Art Lot 719 with original bar-code label attached and Art Institute of Chicago Inventory Numbers to base.
