清末时期翡翠成为宫廷宠物。特别是慈禧太后对翡翠情有独钟，翡翠的雕琢技术达到顶峰不但精美而且极具艺术价值，此件翡翠体型硕大绝非一般人能所有，采用高浮雕、凸雕、镂雕三种雕刻技法。此器堪称极品，一是色泽匀润的大块玉材很难得，十分罕见，由宫廷皇家作为文房器物置于书案上，此件臂搁总体分为双层纹饰，镂空雕出上层云龙纹饰，九条龙雕刻与翡翠之上，苍龙教子以一种言传身教的形式教导幼子，寓意望子成龙、吉祥美好。
