TWO MASSIVE JAPANESE IMARI CHARGERS EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY Both decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, red, green and black enamels, one painted with a large double-handled vase to the well containing chrysanthemum and peonies, the rim with two large birds of prey and two phoenix in between panels of scrolling tendrils; the other with a central panel containing a stylised vase of flowers and with four medallions enclosing butterflies, with shaped panels, further blooms, foliage and pomegranates to the rim, 55.5cm max. (2) Provenance: from an English private collection, Suffolk. Cf. J Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, pp.702-3 no.1716 for other large dishes with similar decoration.
