A magnificent, big, antique, Japanese, wood and lacquer box. Meiji period, late 19th cent. The box made of fine mahogany wood, lacquered inside and outside, exposing the natural grain. The lid portraying a beautiful depiction of a black hawk, flying over golden pine tree. The inside of the lid portraying 5 feathers. Outstanding details. Two sides depicting a gilded gourd and a staff, other 2 sides depicting 2 golden cords. This wooden box could do with some restoration. There is a long crack at the center of the lid. small losses of lacquer inside. Size 13.6x37.5x29 cm.
